How to Make Black Salt for Full Moon Rituals

how to make black salt

The full moon is a time for releasing what is no longer useful. If you need a little extra help in that department, that’s where black salt comes in handy. This is not the Himalayan or Hawaiian black salt that is used in gourmet cooking. This is the witchy kind that you will make yourself to use for protection, unbinding, driving energy out or away, or taking the wind out of the sails in something.

Whenever you are using things to enhance, remove, or direct energy, I advise that you create as much of the things you are going to use to make this happen. This puts your own energy into it from start to finish and makes your outcome stronger. So it’s better to make your own black salt than buy it.

I don’t advise “dabbling” in this type of work. If you are serious about it, learn how to do it responsibly, in a protected away, and with respect to all that it touches.

To make basic black salt, you will need:

  • a mortal and pestle
  • an airtight, glass container
  • sea salt
  • charcoal (activated, food grade or ashes from the fireplace)
  • a pinch of black pepper
  • cone incense

Start by crushing the charcoal and black pepper in to a fine powder using the mortal and pestle while thinking about the purpose for this black salt. Gently add the sea salt and crush. You have added enough salt when the color remains black.

Choose the type of incense that will complement the purpose of the black salt. For example, if you want this for banishing, sage, dragon’s blood, frankincense, myrrh, juniper, or bay. Now make a bed on a fire proof surface and burn the incense cone on the black salt. When the cone is turned to ash, gently mix in the ashes with the black salt.

Store in the airtight glass container until ready to use. Be careful not to spill this as it may result in unintended consequences.

I suggest personalizing this to make it better suited to the intended purpose. For example, if you want to make it stronger, you can add paprika or oak ashes. Cinnamon or clover enhances the protective powers.

If you want to use the power of the moon to enhance your black salt, you can make it during the dark moon or put it outside under a full moon to boost the potency.

What the Heck is Going On With this Crazy Energy?

crazy energy

Have you ever had one of those days or string of days when you are wondering what the heck is going on?  It’s like there is crazy energy all around you. Maybe your day just seems wonky and nothing is going right. Or other people around you seem to be in a daze. If this is what you’re feeling right now, this could be why.

Solstice or Equinox

The solstices and equinoxes are liminal times. Liminal space is like a doorway, a threshold, where things are neither this nor that. Spaces like that are dangerous, unsettled, unpredictable, or transformative. So “normal” doesn’t exist there. This doesn’t mean it’s “bad.” You just have to be more alert and conscious. This can make some people feel “off.” This period lasts for about two weeks.

Full Moon

When the moon is full, the sun and moon are in opposition to each other. The Sun represents your wants and the moon your emotional needs. If these are not in alignment, you can be stirred up. When the moon is full, everything is energized, so this magnifies the effect and makes it so that you can’t ignore it. If it’s not happening in you, it could be happening around you and effect you indirectly.

Eclipse Energy

When an eclipse hits, the moon’s energy is magnified. Full moon (lunar) eclipse energy can be felt up to 2 months before and 6 months afterwards. New moon eclipses (solar) can block us from seeing the big picture, miss opportunities, and consider things that are outside our comfort zone. At this time, expect major shifts in jobs, relationships, perspectives, or finances. Because the energy is so big and unstable, it’s best not to act or react to changes right now.

This doesn’t make eclipses “bad.” There is an element of Fate in play. The thing that you have been avoiding or hoping for could show up at this time. This tends to be a time for a shake up. If you have been snoozing at the wheel, it may prod you to start paying attention. If you have been going in the wrong direction, you will know that now too. You may be tempted to grab the steering wheel, but your best bet is to just hang on for the ride. You’re not driving the bus right now. Any attempt to control will just tire you out and frustrate you. But don’t worry. It’s a self correction. You won’t go off the cliff.

The other thing to keep in mind is that everyone has a different natal chart. The position of the Moon in your chart may mean that an eclipse has a mild impact on you while other people seem to be going crazy. This is normal. If you want to predict the type of effect an eclipse might have on you, look at the House where they fall on your natal chart. If it falls on a planet, that planet will be activated.

Solar and lunar eclipses occur in pairs. The solar eclipses (full moon) tend to expand your outside world. Lunar eclipses (new moon) have more of an effect on your internal environment. Expect headaches, fatigue, anxiety, vivid dreams, feelings of relief, and sensitivity to electronics. Practice good self care during this time.

Mercury in Retrograde

Mercury is the only Roman god who was able to travel to the Underworld. Thus he carried messages from the living to the dead and vice versa. So, Mercury, the messenger, rules communication. Three times a year, the planet Mercury appears to travel in reverse in the sky.

When this happens communications can go awry. It’s not a great time to execute contracts, make big purchases, make or complete travel plans, or make big relationship decisions. Before this hits, you probably want to back up your computer. They have a tendency to go down now or just slow way down. Anything doing with communication could get confusing.

In the days running up to Mercury retrograde and just after, there is a period of weaker influence but if it falls just right in your natal chart, you may get hit with that crazy energy at that time too. Fortunately, this means that each Mercury retrograde feels differently. Maybe it misses you this time.

What’s Happening Now

If you are reading this at the time that it’s being posted (June 29, 19), most of these are in effect. We’re feeling the tail end of the Summer Solstice energy. The solar eclipse happens July 2. Mercury goes retrograde July 7, so we are currently in its shadow. In addition, Chiron goes retrograde July 8.

Chiron is the wounded healer. When he’s retrograde, the scab from your oldest, most painful struggles gets pulled off. Since the moon is in Cancer, the sign of emotions, it could be a wild ride. This in play for everyone. If you want to know what your Chiron energy is, go here for a free natal chart and find out.

In the last few days, I started many things that got blocked. People were driving very slow and carelessly. I’ve had some scheduling miscommunications. There have been 4 human deaths and 2 animals deaths. (This is more associated with the solstices and equinoxes). These are some of the ways it can show up for you.

So, if you feel like hiding under the covers, don’t fret. It passes. It’s a great time to use this energy in ways that it can benefit you. Generally speaking, think of it as a reset button. It’s a good time to pause, take care, rethink your direction, practice patience, do some good self care, and finally take care of that old business.

I hope that’s helpful. Feel free to share in the comments how all this crazy energy is impacting YOU!

Three Simple Full Moon Rituals

full moon

Full moons are a time of purging, releasing, death and change. Imagine a pregnant moon in the sky. It’s as big as it can be. There is nothing left for it to do but die and get smaller. That’s the gist of full moon energy. It is the peak and inevitable fall.

Since the sun is shining on the moon in all its glory, it’s also a time for illumination. It’s a great time to see what we don’t like to see or to see what has been hidden for us. So look around. Notice what is new or surprising.

Perhaps most importantly, full moons occur when the sun is opposite the moon. This could bring balance of yin and yang, but most often creates tension. The sun’s light shines on what is opposing you. Perhaps your needs vs. wants is creating trouble. Maybe it’s about your emotional needs vs. your material ones. This tension can erupt into stereotypical lunacy. So be careful!

Burn It!

For a simple full moon banishing ritual, think of what you want to be free from. If it’s combustible, set your intention to release it and burn it in a candle, fireproof bowl or cauldron, or fire pit. If it’s too big or can’t be burned in this way, create a symbol for it or write it down, then burn the paper. The important part is to know that it’s being released and don’t pick it back up again!

Moon Bathing

Moon bathing is going skyclad under the moon to align your body’s energy and help release any energy that is stuck. To begin this ritual, bathe or purify yourself with smoke. You may also want to clear your mind with a brief meditation. Set your intention. Then sit out under the night sky for twenty minutes or longer and allow the moon’s rays to do their magic. If you are a city dweller and don’t have the privacy to do this, you can do it discreetly by allowing the moon’s rays to come in through a window. When you feel finished, thank Sister Moon for her magic.

If it feels right for you, you can enhance the power by aligning your intention with the energy of moon. For example, if you are in an air sign, releasing communication or mental issues would be appropriate. You could also give this a boost by putting harmonizing crystals around you.

Dance It Out

Full moon rituals don’t have to be quiet affairs. They can be noisy and messy. For this one, you start by setting your intention. Dancing is a great way to release emotional energies so things like ridding yourself of resentment, sadness, or grief are great. Choose music that heightens these feelings. Give yourself about twenty minutes to move, wail, chant, and move. Let it all loose.

If you haven’t laughed or smiled in a while, you can also make that your intention. You’re not “banishing” it, but your intention could be to allow it out into the light of the night.

Sometimes words are not the right energy for what you need. Movement and sound are more powerful. If that feels right for you at this time, consider dancing. And don’t take “dancing” literally. Any movement to music will do. It’s not a contest or performance. It’s just you moving into your feelings and letting them out.

Full moons are great times to honor the cycles and step into the wheel of life. I hope this gives you some ideas on how to do that. Let us know how they work out for you!

Making Moon Water

Making Moon Water

Want to capture the energy of the moon and savor it long after it’s gone? You can with moon water.

What is Moon Water?

So, what exactly is moon water? It’s exactly what it sounds like. It’s water that has been set out under the full moon to soak up all the moonshine goodness. To make it, all you have to do is start with distilled, spring, or filtered water in a large glass container. This can be a mason jar or lemonade style jar with a spigot at the bottom. You don’t want to use plastic because of the chemicals in plastic. You also want your water to be as pure as possible so I use freshly distilled water that has never been in a plastic container.

Add a little natural sea salt. The amount depends on how large your jar is. If you’re using a gallon jug, 1/8 of a teaspoon seems about right. Use this as a guide for smaller containers.

Now “charge” it with your intention. Remember that intention is everything. While it’s not necessary to align your intention with the energy of the moon, it certainly makes it more powerful. Since this is a full moon, you might want to charge it with things you want to get rid of or be free of like old memories, a job that isn’t working for you, or a bad habit. Since full moons are full of energy, you could also charge it with something you want to give more power to. This could be something like more physical energy, more assertiveness, or more money.

Allow your covered, charged jar to sit underneath the moonlight over night. If you have animals, or there are animals in the area, be sure to put it somewhere that they won’t disturb it. You don’t want Fluffy drinking out of your bowl! Some people add crystals around their jar to super charge it. If this feels right for you, go for it.

Don’t worry if it’s cloudy, raining, or snowing. The moon is still out there juicing everything up. If you live in a high rise with no place to put it that receives direct moonlight, you could sit it in the window sill. This doesn’t work as well, but it will still work.

In the morning, take the water in and seal it for use later or use it right away.

What Do You Do With Moon Water?

Okay, now you’ve got all this juicy moon water, what do you do with it? You can use it for lots of things! You can drink it. Notice your intention infusing your cells with this energy as it goes into your body. Some say it tastes really different from ordinary water. You might want to do a taste test to see what you think.

You can water your plants with it. Plants are really receptive to different energies. Notice if they perk up or grow faster.

You can bathe in it. The skin in the largest organ in the body. It’s very porous and takes in everything that you put on it. This is a quick way to get all that intention inside.

You can make a spritz with it. Spaces need freshening. Think of it like Florida water. You can also use it to purify objects.

Rituals may be enhanced when you use moon water vs. non infused water.

What you do with it can depend on your intention. Use your intuition to figure out the best way to use it for your intended purpose.

How Does It Help?

  • The full moon is active energy. You may feel more energized.
  • The moon energy is intuitive. Moon water may put you in touch with your intuition.
  • This water can help you to manifest your intention.

Enjoy! Let me know how it goes. I’d love to hear how you use your moon water to harness the energy of the full moon.

How Moon Energy Impacts Us

How Moon Energy Impacts Us

All this talk about new and full moon energy can be confusing. Let’s see if we can make some sense of the astrological impact that the moon has on our energy, shall we?

New Moon Energy

There are 13 moon cycles each year. The new moon is when the sun and moon are in perfect alignment. The sun shines on the side facing away from the earth, so there is no reflection visible from earth. It appears dark in the sky. At this magical time, for a period of only one day, the Sun and Moon occupy the same Zodiac sign. This is actually a pretty cool phenomenon because the Sun represents your wants. The Moon represents your needs, and on this day, they are in alignment.

Also during this period, we feel more introspective. It’s good to allow ourselves to tap into that because the Moon is ready to support you in starting new things. So all those new ideas can take flight. If you don’t pay attention, you could miss a golden opportunity. The astrological sign that the new Moon is occupying is more active at this time too. If you’re trying to manifest something in particular, it’s good to pay attention to this. The New moon is a time of high negative ion flow. This puts us in a good mood.

Full Moon Energy

Full moons happen when the opposite alignment of the Sun and Moon occur. The Sun is not behind the Moon, but facing it. This makes the Moon fully illuminated. It also means that the Sun and Moon are in opposition, or your wants and needs are not working together. Since the full moon energy can amp you up or lead to a flood of emotions. The moon is also increasing positive ions which enhance this effect. If you feel tired, wired, stressed, or challenged, this could be why. Your conscious and unconscious desires could be in conflict. Guess who will win?

There is always a silver lining to everything though. This is the perfect time to finish things up or let them go. When you make a conscious choice to do this, it frees up energy so that you don’t get bogged down with too many projects, relationships, or obligations. If you set intentions at the new moon, this could be when you start to see the fruit of your labors show up too.

Eclipse Energy

Eclipses are super powerful times when the moon energy is magnified.

Super Moon Energy

The Moon orbits the Earth in an elliptical pattern. Sometimes it’s closer to the Earth than other times. When this happens and the Earth, Moon, and Sun are in alignment, the Moon appears larger in the sky giving us a Super Moon. The energetic force is 18% stronger at this time. This results in a stronger full moon effect, but not as strong as an eclipse.

The Moon in the Signs

Everyone has a natal Moon. This is the astrological sign of the Moon at the time of your birth. This energy stays with you your entire life and impacts your emotional needs – particularly when you are stressed.

Then there are lunations. Lunations are the period of time from one new moon to the next. When the Moon enters into a sign, the energy of the moon stays in that sign for the whole lunar cycle or month. This can get confusing because the Moon spends about two and a half days in each sign, going through the whole Zodiac in a month.

If the new moon is a feminine sign, the next full moon will be a masculine sign. If the current new moon is a feminine sign, the next new moon will be a masculine sign. To visualize this, see above. The red boxes are for January 2018 where we had a Capricorn (earth, feminine) new moon followed by a Leo (masculine, fire) super, full, blood moon. Capricorn happens in January. Leo starts in July, so they are on opposite sides of the zodiac. You will see that the pattern repeats in February 2018 with the moon phases in green. This is to create wholeness and balance.

All this changing energy might lead you to think that the Moon is always changing. She is, and she still has the same energy at the start of your life for your entire life. She has the same energy at the start of an astrological sign/new moon for the entire month despite moving into a new sign every 2 1/2 days. The wheel of life isn’t one wheel. There are wheels within wheels. They are all turning together. I will speak about this in a future article so look out for it.
