How to Be Spiritual
More and more often I hear people say, “I don’t know how to be spiritual.” This saddens me greatly. That’s like saying, “I don’t know how to laugh” or “I don’t know what my stomach feels like.” Not knowing how to be spiritual is a state of separation from yourself. Spirituality is not something that you do. It’s something that you are. Like being emotional, physical, and mental. Imagine how alien it would feel to not know how to feel or to think! It’s as big a deal to not be in touch with your spirituality. So, let’s remedy that!
Spirituality is an awareness and practice of being a connected energetic being. Your spirit is the conscious part of you that exists outside your body. A really great way to get in touch with it is sensory deprivation. When you go into a float pod, you eliminate sound, light, and a sense of touch (unless you touch the sides of the tank or yourself). So many of the things that distract you from sensing your consciousness are gone. There is nothing for your brain to do so eventually it will just slow down until it stops. When there are no more thoughts, you can experience your spiritual essence.
Speaking from my own experience, I can say that sometimes it feels like nothing. Nothing is no sensation, no thought, no worry. There is no sense of being anywhere or anything. There is no sense of belonging or not belonging. It’s just nothing. That might sound scary to some, but to me it was very freeing. It let me know that all the things that my mind manufactured don’t exist here. There is nothing to want and nothing to do – unless I decided to make it so. This Nothing also extends to the world outside of me. So it’s not as if I have ceased to exist. It’s as if the world and I are one, and we are in a Void.
The other experience in a float tank is the feeling of being Everything. All light, dark, people, animals, plants, anything that was every thought of in any time or place in existence is all me. I am inseparable from the Whole. This is a feeling of All Things. All joy, pain, sorrow, awakening, potential, everything. It’s complete bliss.
It’s not the easiest thing to experience. It may not happen the third time or the twentieth time in a float tank, but it does happen. Just give it time.
Once you get a sense of your spiritual essence, bring it out into the world and connect. You can do this by allowing yourself to see this same sense of energy in other things. The easiest things to see it in are non-human. Humans hide. So try connecting to the natural world first. Once you get the hang of that, work up to people.
- So try tasting it in water, seeing it in a bird as it glides across the sky, or in the veins in a leaf.
- Look for the synchronicity in dreams and real life.
- Pay attention to the cycles of the moon and how that shows up in your life.
- Notice how color or light affect your mood.
- Take a mindful walk in nature on a regular basis.
- Unplug daily at a set time.
- Turn off all electrical lights at 9:00 p.m.
- Go into your body and ask it what it is feeling or what it wants.
- Make a practice of mindfully drinking tea just to experience the warmth of the cup and the taste of the tea.
- Stare at the stars.
- Let yourself feel what you feel.
When you do these types of things long enough, the inner chatter starts to quiet. You sink down into your body. You feel your feelings. And then you begin to come alive. You see, there is not a lot to learn about how to be spiritual. It’s more about stop doing the things that get in the way of being whole. Busyness creates numbness that deadens the experience of being alive. We do this to not feel the pain of life, but actually that is where the juice is. That’s where the growth it.
