Getting to Know the Hyacinth

Hyacinth is one of my favorite flowers. It blossoms early brightening the earth with loads of color. If you miss the colors, you won’t miss the incredible fragrance. It’s such a delight for the senses.

Greek mythology has a story about Hyacinth. The flower was named for a beautiful mortal man who was loved by gods and men, including the sun god, Apollo. Apollo and Hyacinth had many adventures in their short time together. One day Apollo was teaching Hyacinth how to throw the discus. Zephyrus, god of the west wind noticed. He was jealous because Hyacinth chose Apollo over him. Zephyrus blew the discus so that it struck Hyacinth in the head, killing him. Where the blood stained the earth, hyacinths blossomed.

Animism is about living in relationship with everything. Knowing the stories associated with plants, animals, and places can help you to learn their properties if you want to use them for healing, food, or magic.

In Victorian England, flowers worked as a sort of coded message with each flower having a meaning. The meaning for hyacinth depends upon the color. Yellow is for jealousy. White is for purity. Red is for romance or love. Purple symbolizes royalty, spirituality, respect, or gratitude. As the flower is named for the death of Hyacinth, any color can also indicate sorrow.

There are three types of hyacinth: Hyacinthus litwinowii, Hyacinthus orientalis (which is the most common type that is pictured here), and
Hyacinthus transcaspicus. These belong to the asparagus family. These are not to be confused with water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) or hyacinth bean (Lablab purpureus).

Hyacinth orientalis has medicinal properties; however it must be handled with care because the leaf, sap and bulbs are toxic. The bulb contains oxalic acid, which is found in many bleaches and cleaners. Oxalic acid is also used often in the removal of rust.

The element of hyacinth is Air (which is appropriate since Zephyrus used the wind to kill Hyacinth).

Hyacinth absolute can be used to help with grief, improve sleep, reduce anxiety, heal a broken heart, promote forgiveness, and connect with the spirit realm.

If you want to experience the gentle power of hyacinth for yourself, sit near some flowering plants and inhale the fragrance while you open your energy field and mind. See what you can receive.

Don’t rush the process. Like with people, it can sometimes take a while for other creatures to open up. Rest assured that you patience will pay off.
